Switzerland Elopement - Real Story & Guide

When Celestina and Valentino first contacted us over a year ago with their unique elopement in Switzerland, we knew it was going to be something special. They wanted a stress-free, fun-filled day where they could get legally married amidst the breathtaking beauty of the Swiss Alps. Their priorities were simple: get married, have fun, avoid stress, drink champagne, eat delicious food, look stunning, enjoy nature, and—if possible—see alpacas. With that in mind, we set out to plan the perfect Switzerland Elopement for them.

The Perfect Switzerland Elopement

Celestina & Valentino’s vision for their day was clear. They wanted an outdoor ceremony, legal marriage, and a day full of exploring, hiking, dancing, and enjoying each other’s company. The plan was to start with a leisurely hike for an early and private ceremony in the scenic Swiss alps, stopping for photos and fun along the way, having a relaxed day full of exploring before heading to their civil ceremony, where we not only were their documentation vendors, but also translators and witnesses. They wanted to avoid crowds, so we chose secluded spots and timed our activities to maintain their privacy. And bonus point: we walked with Alpacas! But more on that later.

What the Couple had to say about their Elopement in Switzerland with us

Before going any further here, we want to show you the review of our gorgeous, gorgeous couple. Feedback like this after the elopement day warms our hearts. Because your elopement day is not only important to you, but to us too. We want you to have THE most incredible day ever. Whatever floats your boat floats ours as well. And the best part is, when clients become our friends. That’s what happened here.

"Thank you once again from the bottom of our hearts! We have put together a list of favorite photos, but actually that’s just all the pictures. You really were our MVP on our wedding day (organizer, driver, translator, witness, photographer, alpaca wrangler, champagne refiller,...)! Thanks to your efforts the day was really super relaxed and fabulous for us (despite the rain). Thank you so much for capturing our wedding day so beautifully with your pictures! Lots of love”
Celestina & Valentino

Fun fact: With this super special moment where Celestina & Valentino celebrated their civil ceremony in style with Celestina’s dad (their witness) we even won the Elopement Legend Award! Such an honor!! <3 You can find more about the award here: Legend Award

Elopement Outdoor Ceremony in the Swiss Alps

One important thing to keep in mind before you’re planning your Switzerland Elopement day: Even if we wish for sun all day long, we highly suggest planning for every weather there is. Especially when you are planning an outdoor elopement. The thing is, weather is unpredictable, specifically when you’re eloping in the alps. But the good thing is: Your elopement day is gonna be one of the most amazing days of your life – no matter the weather.

You might think now, why are they talking about bad weather already? Well, C and V hoped for a morning sunrise while saying their vows with the backdrop of the Swiss alps. And even though we didn’t get the sunrise, it was the most beautiful morning and outdoor ceremony. With the starting point at their chalet, we hiked up a small hill. As we reached our final destination after about 30 minutes, C and V had an early morning breakfast with some delicious cinnamon buns. After that, they helped each other getting dressed and ready for their ceremony. It was a beautiful elopement ceremony filled with tears and laughter, a rollercoaster of touching emotions. Just perfect – and everything without the sun’s presence.

This is what your Elopement Day in Switzerland can look like:

  • 05:30 AM – Meet up

We arrived bright and early, ready to capture the beginning of C and V’s special day.

  • 05:30-06:00 AM – Short Hike to Sunrise Spot

We embarked on a short hike to their early morning outdoor ceremony.

  • 06:00-08:00 AM – Ceremony, Photos, Celebration, Enjoying Pastries

C and V exchanged vows in an intimate ceremony as nature awoke, followed by some amazing photos with the beautiful Swiss Alps as a backdrop.

  • 08:00 AM – Hike back to the Chalet, Have Coffee/Breakfast, Freshen Up, Dress Change

After our morning adventure, we hiked back to the chalet for a relaxing breakfast, freshening up, and an outfit change.

  • 10:00 AM – Dancing, Hiking, Celebrating

C and V wanted to avoid too much posing and instead focus on enjoying their day. We spent our time hiking, exploring beautiful spots, and dancing to their day-of playlist. The relaxed timeline allowed us to capture authentic, joyful moments without the stress of a tightly packed schedule. We hit the road for a scenic drive, stopping along the way to take photos, pop some champagne, and soak in the breathtaking views. And Of course, we couldn’t forget the champagne. We celebrated their union with a toast in the mountains, capturing candid moments of laughter and love. Throughout the day, we prioritized capturing the genuine emotions and spontaneous joy that C and V shared.

  • 11:00 AM – Elopement Activity Idea: Go on a walk with Alpakas

A highlight of the day was fulfilling C’s wish to see alpacas. We found a local farm that welcomed us, and the joy on C and V’s faces as they interacted with the adorable animals was priceless. This playful stop added a unique and memorable touch to their elopement.

  • 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM – Have a Break, Have Lunch with Dad, Dress Change

We took a short lunch breach, enjoying a meal with C’s dad, who came along to be a witness for their civil ceremony, followed by another beautiful outfit change.

  • 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM – Travel Time to Civil Ceremony Spot + Buffer Time for Packing Up,  Getting in the Car, Getting Directions Ready, etc.

We allowed ample time for travel to the civil ceremony spot, ensuring a smooth and relaxed transition.

  • 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM – Civil Ceremony

C and V officially tied the knot in a beautiful civil ceremony, an old, charming museum, making their union legally binding. If you also want to get legally married like C & V did, it is a bit different for every country. The process is straightforward but requires some preparation. If you don’t speak the local language (Swiss-German, German, or French), you’ll need a translator to ensure everything is understood. Additionally, you need two witnesses present during the ceremony. If you don’t have your own witnesses, your photo and video team can fulfill this role as well. The ceremony itself is formal but intimate, providing a legally binding union. In some areas, you can also get legally married outside, however, most civil ceremonies are held inside in a registry office. We can definitely help you with the communication, as we speak german and english fluently and can therefore help you plan your civil ceremony in Switzerland, Germany, Austria and the Dolomites as well.

  • 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM – Cocktail Hour at Vintage Bar

The day concluded with a delightful cocktail hour at a charming vintage bar, celebrating with drinks and laughter – and Valentino even played on the piano for his new wife!

Three Stunning Elopement Outfits and a Day Full of Magic

C had planned three dress changes, each more stunning than the last. And also V had outfit changes along the day. This allowed us to capture a variety of looks and settings, from casual hiking shots to elegant portraits amidst the alpine scenery. We made sure to incorporate these changes seamlessly into our day, adding to the fun and excitement of the adventure.

Embracing Tradition: Indian Henna on the Brides hand

As part of their unique celebration, C embraced V’s Indian heritage by applying henna (Mehndi) on her hands and feet. Traditionally, a Mehndi ceremony involves the bride’s family and friends coming together to apply the paste, which symbolizes positive spirits and good luck. However, since their elopement was a surprise for their family and friends, C didn’t have any relatives at her Henna appointment, but of course V was with her. This tradition is typically held the night before the wedding to wish the bride good health and prosperity in her new journey. C’s beautiful henna designs were a meaningful and stunning addition to their special day. She also tattooed their initials into her hand palms – how amazing!

Why Eloping in the Swiss Alps is a Great Choice

The Swiss Alps offer a stunning backdrop for any elopement, combining natural beauty with tranquility and romance. The towering peaks, lush valleys, and crystal-clear lakes create a picturesque setting that’s hard to match. Whether you’re seeking adventure or relaxation, the Swiss Alps have something for everyone. Here are a few tips for couples considering an elopement in this magical place:

  1. Choose the Right Location: The Swiss Alps are vast, so consider what kind of scenery and activities you want. Whether it’s the serene beauty of Walensee or the rugged charm of Zermatt, each location offers its unique charm. Pro-tip: Also a small part of Lake Como is in Switzerland – for example the Brissago Islands. Can highly recommend looking into this area as well!
  2. Plan for All Weather: The weather in the Alps can be unpredictable. Having a flexible plan and being prepared for various conditions ensures your day remains stress-free. That’s why always offer at least 1-day reservations before and after your planned elopement date. That means, that if you book the 2nd of July for example, we are always keeping the 1st and 3rd of July free as well, to have a back-up plan in mind. This is already included in our prices too. So Win-Win! Although, a cloudy, mystic or even rainy elopement day can be amazing as well! For C & V’s elopement for example, we had everything, from rain to sunshine – and it was perfect!
  3. Prioritize Your Preferences: Just like C and V, make a list of your top priorities. Whether it’s avoiding crowds, having an alpaca sighting, or including specific traditions, tailoring the day to your desires will make it unforgettable.
  4. Hire Professionals: Professional elopement vendors are KEY to have a relaxed and easy going day. We are here to help you craft your dream day and think about timeline, back-up plans, activities, things to consider when eloping and so on. In Switzerland, Germany, Austria and the Dolomites, we can also function as your communicator with the local registry, if you want to get legally married as well, as we speak german and englisch fluently.

This was Celestina & Valentino’s super intimate elopement ceremony early in the morning. They hiked up to a viewpoint, where we unfortunately didn’t get to see the sun but it was the most beautiful and emotional ceremony ever.

Discover More Elopement Locations in Switzerland

On the drive home, we stumbled upon another great elopement location: the Walensee. Its serene waters and stunning mountain views make it a fantastic choice for couples seeking a tranquil yet picturesque setting. Other popular elopement locations in Switzerland include:

  • Savognin: This is the area, C & V got married and where you already saw some amazing pictures. Savognin has a lot to offer when it comes to picturesque views.
  • Zermatt: Famous for the iconic Matterhorn, it offers dramatic landscapes and charming alpine villages.
  • Interlaken: Nestled between two beautiful lakes and surrounded by mountains, it’s perfect for adventure-loving couples.
  • Lake Geneva: With its elegant chateaus and scenic vineyards, it provides a romantic backdrop.
  • Lauterbrunnen Valley: Known for its stunning waterfalls and lush meadows, it’s a fairy-tale setting for an elopement.
