Emma & Josh's Luxury South Africa Safari Elopement at Mhondoro Game Lodge
A real South Africa Safari Elopement story planned and captured by Elopement photographer & videographer duo Katja & Walter | Wenola Weddings
Some elopements are about epic landscapes. Some are about adventure. And then there are days like Emma and Josh’s – where luxury, romance, wildlife, and meaningful moments come together to create an experience that feels almost unreal.
When Emma and Josh first reached out to us, they knew exactly what they wanted their wedding day to feel like. Not rushed or stressful, and just the two of them, surrounded by nature, enjoying every moment together.
A few months later, we found ourselves in South Africa at the incredible Mhondoro Safari Lodge & Villa, located in the Welgevonden Game Reserve, about 4.5 hours from Johannesburg Airport. And honestly? This elopement day exceeded every expectation! So if you’re dreaming of a luxury safari elopement in South Africa, with wellness, wildlife, bonfires and a private dinner, you’re in the right place – because this day was really top-notch!
Why E & J Chose a South Africa Safari Elopement
Emma and Josh weren’t looking for a traditional wedding, instead they wanted time together and a great adventure. They also wanted luxury and wellness, but most importantly, they wanted an experience they would remember forever.
A little background story: Emma’s favorite animals have always been elephants, and seeing them in the wild together with Josh was at the very top of her elopement list. The idea of exchanging vows surrounded by the African bush and then heading out on safari together felt like the perfect way to start their marriage.
So rather than spending their day entertaining guests, they flew to South Africa and focused completely on each other.

Would We Recommend Mhondoro for a Luxury Elopement in South Africa?
Mhondoro offered one of the most incredible elopement experiences we’ve ever witnessed. The lodge itself is breathtaking. The staff is exceptional. The wildlife experiences are unforgettable. And guides like Jake make every game drive feel personal and meaningful. If you’re dreaming of a luxury safari elopement where you can relax, reconnect, and experience the magic of Africa together, Mhondoro deserves a place at the very top of your list.
It is important to mention, though: this is a true luxury safari experience and one of the more expensive options in South Africa. The private lodge, incredible service, exclusive location, and unforgettable wildlife experiences all come with a premium price tag.
But if you’re dreaming of a once-in-a-lifetime safari elopement where every detail feels effortless and luxurious, Mhondoro is absolutely worth considering. That being said, Mhondoro is not the only beautiful option. South Africa has many incredible safari lodges and game reserves that offer unforgettable elopement experiences at different price points. At the end of this blogpost, we’ve included more beautiful safari elopement locations that might be a better fit depending on your budget, style, and the kind of experience you’re dreaming of.
How your Safari Elopement in South Africa can look like – Emma & Josh’s Day
7:00 – 8:30 AM | Morning Safari Adventure
What better way to start your wedding day in South Africa than with a safari?
Early in the morning, Emma and Josh headed out on a game drive through the reserve as the African bush slowly came to life. The excitement of a safari is that you never know what you’ll see around the next corner. But they were lucky: throughout their stay, they were able to spot some of their dream animals, including elephants – Emma’s absolute favorites – as well as giraffes and zebras.
8:30 – 11:30 AM | A Slow Morning at the Lodge
After returning from safari, they spent a few relaxed hours enjoying the incredible lodge. They enjoyed breakfast, took in the views, and simply soaked up the fact that they were getting married in one of the most beautiful places in Africa.
12:15 PM | Getting Ready Begins
Instead of getting ready separately all day, Emma and Josh wanted to share this part of the experience together.
3:15 PM | Final Touches & First Look
As hair and makeup wrapped up, Emma slipped into the final stages of getting ready. A quick snack, some final details, and then they had their first look on the beautiful terrace of their suite overlooking the South African wilderness.
4:15 – 5:00 PM | Safari Drive to Their Ceremony Location
Next, they climbed into an open safari vehicle and headed toward their ceremony location. Meanwhile the African sun was beginning to soften, wildlife was becoming more active, and their ceremony spot awaited somewhere out in the wilderness. Their ceremony spot couldn’t have been more perfect!
5:15 PM | Vows, Rings & Champagne
Standing together in the heart of the reserve, Emma and Josh exchanged vows, rings, and promises for their future together. Afterwards, they celebrated with champagne while taking in the incredible scenery around them.
5:45 PM | Wedding Cake in the Bush
After the ceremony came one of the sweetest parts of the day. Together they cut their wedding cake and celebrated their first moments as newlyweds surrounded by the beauty of the African landscape. Emma even had a spontaneous bouquet toss with Andri from Mhondoro and her stylist Rochelle, it was soo much fun!
6:00 PM | Couple Portraits
Before heading back we took some time for couple portraits in the wilderness. We laughed together, explored together, and created images and films that genuinely reflect who they are. And we even saw some Zebras on the way back who got in on the photos!
7:00 PM | Private Dinner & Bonfire
Then a beautifully decorated private dinner was waiting for them. Surrounded by candlelight, flowers, and the sounds of the African bush, they enjoyed an intimate dinner together while reflecting on everything they had experienced throughout the day. To end the evening, Emma and Josh headed to the bonfire. With dessert, drinks, and the crackling campfire creating a cozy atmosphere under the stars, they spent the rest of the evening simply enjoying each other’s company.
A Celebration We’ll Never Forget
One of the most unexpected and heartwarming moments of the day happened right after the ceremony, when we arrived back at Mhondoro Logde. The incredible Mhondoro team surprised Emma & Josh with music and a celebration of their own. They started playing a typical Mhondoro, and before long everyone was dancing together, laughing, clapping, and celebrating the newlyweds. We still have the tune in our ears “Mhondoro is calling my name, Mhondoro is calling my naaaaame”. 🎶
It wasn’t something that had been planned or scheduled, it was simply one of those beautiful, genuine moments that happened naturally.
The warmth and kindness of the Mhondoro staff made the whole experience feel even more special. You could tell how much they cared about creating unforgettable memories for their guests. Watching everyone come together to celebrate Emma and Josh in the middle of the African bush was pure joy and one of those moments that perfectly captured the spirit of the day.
Kind Words from Emma & Josh
Wondering how to include Family & Friends into your Safari Elopement? This is what Emma & Josh did!
So many couples are wondering how they can include their family & friends into their elopement. And we absolutely loved Emma and Josh’s approach on how they chose to involve their family into their elopement:
They intentionally kept their wedding day and safari experience completely private and a surprise. Then, a few months later, they invited family and friends to celebrate with them back home. They dressed up in their wedding outfits again, shared their photos and film, told stories from the safari, and relived the entire adventure with the people they love.
For couples wondering how to balance an intimate elopement with family expectations, this is such a beautiful option.

A Pro Tip from your Experienced Safari Elopement Photo, Video and Planning Duo
One thing we’d highly recommend for couples planning a safari elopement is allowing enough time for multiple game drives. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. That’s part of what makes safari so special.
If seeing specific animals or having photos with wildlife in the background is important to you, we strongly recommend planning at least two or three game drives across a 1.5 to 2-day elopement experience. The more time you spend exploring, the more opportunities you’ll have to experience incredible wildlife encounters. And trust us – you’ll want the extra time.
Other Safari Elopement Lodges in South Africa (For Smaller Budgets)
