Why an Icleand Elopement is the best choice you'll ever make - that is a promise!

If you never stop adventuring, Iceland is made for you and your elopement. Where else can you hike past waterfalls, walk on ancient glaciers, take wedding pictures on a black sandy beach and kiss beneath the northern sky, all in one day? If your love story is a little wild, a little bold, and your hearts long for an unforgettable adventure… then this is your kind of place to say “I do”.

If you’re ready to start planning your Iceland Elopement, then we are the ones to invite to your special day.

A boring blog would read like this: As your experienced Iceland elopement photographer and videographer, we put together an Iceland Elopement Guide for adventurous couples, telling you everything you need to know when planning your elopement in Iceland!

But we prefer this: Don’t overthink it, let’s do this together. It’s gonna be the single most epic thing you’ve ever done in your life.

6 Reasons why you should choose an Iceland elopement

No place like Iceland, honestly! It feels dramatic, untouched and absolutely surreal. Volcanic landscapes, endless glaciers, moss-covered lava fields, and more waterfalls than you can count (we’ve tried, but failed). Iceland is an island where nature puts on a show. And the best part? You can truly craft a day that feels intimate, adventurous, and uniquely yours. Still need convincing?

Here are 6 reasons why you will fall in love with the idea of an Iceland elopement:

  • you can hike to hidden canyons and lava fields for a private, epic ceremony spot
  • you can say your vows on a black sand beach with crashing waves as your soundtrack
  • you can explore ice caves or walk on an ancient glacier for unforgettable elopement photos
  • you can even stand in front of majestic waterfalls
  • you can experience the midnight sun or when you’re lucky even the magical northern lights
  • and after an adventurous elopement day you can relax in a geothermal hot spring or luxury lodge

So, should be right up your alley, right? If you want solitude in the highlands or iconic backdrops like Skógafoss, there’s no shortage of breathtaking spots to choose from and plan your Iceland elopement exactly like YOU want to.

The 7 Best Iceland Elopement Locations

Can’t get enough? Understandable! So why not already have a look at possible locations. Here are some breathtaking spots to consider when planning your Iceland elopement! These spots make perfect locations for your ceremony and also fairy-tale like photos!

  • Skógafoss Waterfall – One of Iceland’s most iconic waterfalls with a powerful, magical vibe.
  • Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach: Stark, moody, and unforgettable.
  • Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon: A dreamy, winding canyon perfect for a quiet vow exchange.
  • Vatnajökull Glacier: Say your vows on ice for a truly unique experience.
  • Kirkjufell Mountain: A stunning and surreal backdrop that looks straight out of a fantasy movie.
  • Sólheimajökull Glacier: A breathtaking, accessible glacier where you can walk on ancient ice and feel the wild, raw power of Iceland’s nature.

Unique Iceland Elopement Experiences

Iceland is about adventure in nature, you got that one already. But what should you do during your full day experience? Here are three unforgettable ideas that adventurous couples love:

Iceland Glacier Elopement

If you want your iceland elopement to feel like a scene from another planet, a glacier elopement is perfect. Imagine exchanging vows on a shimmering sheet of ancient ice, surrounded by towering peaks and the quiet crunch of snow underfoot. A glacier elopement in Iceland is ideal for winter or early spring, and you’ll need the right gear (and a guide) to keep it safe and comfortable. But the photos and the experience are truly unmatched.

Iceland Black Sand Beach Elopement

For a moody and dramatic vibe, head to one of Iceland’s iconic black sand beaches, like Reynisfjara or the more secluded Dyrhólaey. The contrast of your wedding attire against the dark sands and basalt cliffs makes for incredible photos. Just be cautious of the strong waves and winds, but we’ll be there as your guides and after all, that’s part of the adventure!

Iceland Waterfall Elopement

With hundreds of breathtaking waterfalls to choose from, an Iceland waterfall elopement is probably the most quintessential experience. From the thunderous Skógafoss to the more hidden Seljalandsfoss (where you can even stand behind the falls), these locations are equal parts romantic and awesome. The sound of thunderous water becomes the most magical soundtrack to your vows.

And you know what? In Iceland, you can even get all of this in one day! A stunning black sand beach, a waterfall and a glacier.

The Best Time for your Iceland Elopement

Iceland is breathtaking, no matter which season. However, knowledge is power and each season offers different options for your adventurous elopement in Iceland, so let’s look into it a bit more!

Summer (June-August): Summer in Iceland means long daylight hours (hello, midnight sun!), warmer temperatures, and accessible roads. On the other hand, Summer is of course quite popular and crowded. (Just the tourist regions, though)

Autumn (September-October): In Autumn there are fewer crowds, colorful landscapes, and a chance to catch the Northern Lights. So definitely a season we would recommend for your Iceland elopement!

Winter (November-March): Winters in Iceland are quite moody. Yet they are magical with snow, ice caves, and plenty of chances to see the Northern Lights. If you choose to elope in Iceland in winter you have to expect colder temperatures and short days. Ifthat’s not worrying you or you love the cold and cuddling up, perfect!

Spring (April-May): Spring is still quieter and beautiful with melting snow and blooming moss. So if you’re looking for a less crowded period, we can also recommend Spring, as the weather is warmer and this time is also perfect to visit hot springs.

How much does an Iceland Elopement cost?

Money is a thing, we get it. So let’s talk about what an Iceland elopement costs. Getting Around Iceland: Why we recommend Renting a Car for your Iceland Elopement

One of the best (and in our experience really the only practical) ways to get around Iceland for your elopement is by renting a car. Public transport outside Reykjavik is virtually nonexistent, and taxis are rare and also very expensive. If you want the freedom to explore at your own pace, chasing waterfalls, stopping at hidden black sand beaches, or pulling over when you spot wild Icelandic horses, having your own car is key.

Here are a few important tips when renting a car in Iceland:

  • Book early: Especially in summer (June–August), rental cars sell out quickly, so reserve as soon as you know your elopement date.
  • Choose the right car: For summer and main roads (the Ring Road), a regular 2WD car is usually fine. But if you plan to venture into the Highlands or explore F-roads (mountain roads), you’ll need a 4×4.

  • Expect high fuel prices: Gas is expensive in Iceland, so factor that into your budget.
  • Insurance matters: Iceland’s roads and weather can be tough, so full insurance coverage (including sand & ash damage) is highly recommended.
  • Driving tips: Always check the weather and road conditions (f.e. here) before heading out. Drive slowly on gravel roads and watch for sheep on the roads!

Having a rental car also allows you to create a truly custom elopement timeline and to visit multiple breathtaking locations throughout the day. If you want, we can even help you choose the best routes and spots to include on your adventure. Reach out to us here to start planning your Iceland Elopement!

Can you Get Legally Married in Iceland?

Yes, you can legally get married in Iceland and many couples from all over the world choose to do so! Iceland recognizes international marriages, and it’s relatively straightforward if you plan ahead.

What you need to know:

  • You’ll need to submit certain documents (like birth certificates, passports, and a certificate of marital status) to the Icelandic authorities at least 3 weeks before your wedding date.

  • The ceremony can be performed by a civil officiant, a priest, or even outdoors, as long as it meets the legal requirements.

  • At least one officiant registered with the Icelandic state must oversee the ceremony for it to be valid.

Our Tip: Even though it’s possible to get legally married in Iceland, many couples still choose to do the legal paperwork at home and have a symbolic elopement in Iceland – we would recommend this especially if they want more flexibility with the location, time and type of ceremony.

Pro Tip: Visit an Icelandic Horse Stable & Take Wedding Photos with These Beauties

One of Iceland’s most charming (and photogenic!) features is its iconic Icelandic horses. With their fluffy manes, gentle personalities, and centuries of history, they make an unforgettable addition to your elopement day. Many farms and stables welcome visitors, so you can stop by, meet the horses, and even arrange to take some wedding or elopement photos with them. Just make sure to arrange it in advance with a farm or your photographer & videographer, and respect the animals and the farm’s rules.
